The Auric Reach

A canyon cut open for its gold. A city built from what stayed behind.

The mountain keeps the count.

A city below the horizon

From the rim, the Reach looks abandoned. Descend the switchback road and the walls begin to glow: kitchens, workshops, the little square where night-shift miners eat breakfast. The settlement lives inside the old excavation. Every new cut opens another street. Every exhausted seam becomes a room.

The weight of a promise

The Hearthbound stamp each refined bar with the cut that produced it, so a reserve doubles as a record of which seams actually paid. Crews keep the first bar off a new cut mounted above the furnace door. The north lift has been repaired nine times. Its repair fund is still one bar short.

What the Reach cannot make

Gold is plentiful only by the standards of a desperate frontier. Water is not. The Reach trades surveyed ore rights for glacier melt from the Silverwake and runs its refining shifts around the Cinder Union’s power allotment. A rich seam discovered during a dry week can sit untouched.
