A metal for the road
Silverwake miners follow narrow veins beneath the glacier. The mint casts the recovered metal into plates rather than large bars. A courier can divide a payment without carrying tools, and a repair crew can count its wages without a scale.
Work or reserve
Silver belongs in circuit contacts as well as vaults. The Archive needs it to keep old machines alive; the Union needs it at the grid’s switching points. A settlement that stores every plate eventually discovers that its stockpile cannot repair itself.
In a shift
Silver refines fast and cheap, which makes it the metal you reach for when the shift is going badly. It also goes straight back out again as contacts, switchgear and repair stock — the settlements that bank every plate are the ones whose pumps fail first.
