A record of weight

Two identical stamps arrive at the assay desk. Only one story survives inspection.

Trust the person enough to check the mark.

Two arrivals

The couriers arrived an hour apart. Each carried a gold bar stamped North Cut, furnace seven, shift 118. Each carried a valid copy of the same assay. On the desk they looked like twins. The first courier became angry. The second became very quiet. I have learned not to infer much from either response.

The missing repair

We retrieved the furnace log. On shift 117, a cracked stamp had been repaired. The new edge left a small ridge beside the final digit. One bar had the ridge. The other did not. We weighed both, then opened a request for a fresh assay. The quiet courier had the original bar. The angry courier had bought a copy in good faith.

A record is a beginning

The fraudulent bar was not made of nothing. It contained gold, just less than its record claimed. We preserved both assays and traced the sale. The person who lost money wanted us to erase the false record. Instead we marked it as disputed and attached what we had found. Erasing a lie can erase the route back to its author.

At closing time

I walked home through the glasshouses. Warm air from the server hall moved between the beds of onions. It is easy to describe our work as abstract. On a cold evening, passing the people eating what our waste heat grows, it feels less so.
